Nutanix Inc, a global provider of private cloud, hybrid and multi-cloud computing solutions, recently announced that Saudi German Health, one of the leading private healthcare providers in the Middle East and North Africa ( MENA), has successfully deployed the Nutanix hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) and the Nutanix Prism Pro management solution. The implementation effectively addressed the complexity, reliability and scalability issues that previously plagued the IT environment and provided a robust platform to continuously and cost-effectively introduce innovative digital services such as diagnostics. remote and corporate mobility. Nutanix helped the organization cut hardware spend by 40%, enabling a budget shift towards IT initiatives that drive business results and improve patient care. The solution also reduced the backup window by a factor of 4 and significantly reduced IT management overhead by providing powerful centralized management of the entire environment.

Legacy infrastructure

Saudi German Health – the largest healthcare group in Saudi Arabia and part of the BAB Holding Group – prides itself on being a pioneer in the industry and has achieved this goal by offering world-class treatments and facilities, supported by advanced technologies. Years of continuous and significant investments in cutting-edge technological solutions have left Saudi German Health with a complex IT infrastructure. Older hardware-based servers, storage technologies, and virtualization solutions from several different vendors created challenges in managing multiple licenses, support contracts, and of course, hardware and upgrade cycles. Day-to-day management was difficult in the absence of centralized monitoring of the IT environment.

In addition to the above, the risk posed to the availability and proper functioning of the business was of greatest concern.

Hamza Sobhi Batterjee, Chairman of HSB Holding (part of the BAB Holding group) said: “Our Hospital Information System (HIS) and our HYCU backup and disaster solution were running on this legacy infrastructure. With all of our patient data and critical applications at stake, we simply couldn’t accept the sub-par backup and restore performance that resulted from hosting HYCU in this environment.

IT modernization

The IT infrastructure overhaul and modernization project was awarded to Megamind IT Solutions, an organization of the HSB Holding group. The company partners with the world’s leading IT vendors to imagine, design and engineer business solutions and customer expectations. Megamind IT Solutions has been involved in several projects in the MENA region – making businesses smarter, creating smarter solutions to improve accessibility, control costs by reducing waste, and manage people and information for competence.

To address the IT challenges faced by Saudi German healthcare, Megamind IT Solutions decided to implement Nutanix HCI technology after a rigorous evaluation involving two other vendors. “Nutanix came out on top because it offered great features at the most competitive price. In addition, we took a deep dive into the hardware, software, and on-premise physical media each of these three vendors could offer and Nutanix also ranked # 1 on these criteria, ”said Batterjee.

The implementation, which spanned five groups across five geographically dispersed sites, was completed in less than five days, with no impact on the operations of German Saudi hospitals and clinics. “We are a 24/7 operation and patients’ lives depend on our services, there is no margin for error. The fact that we have achieved a seamless migration without any downtime is a testament to the ease of deployment of Nutanix, ”he said.

With HYCU specially designed for Nutanix, the deployment completely eliminated backup and recovery challenges, with a 4X increase in performance. It simplified IT management, eliminating the need for the IT team to perform scheduled maintenance events.

Nutanix HCI has also helped accelerate the pace of innovation for Saudi German Health. According to Batterjee, prior to Nutanix, whenever Saudi German Health wanted to take on a new IT project, they had to request a large budget for associated hardware, which often turned into a stalemate with management. “However, now that we have achieved more than 40% savings on hardware expenses, we have been able to redirect those funds to the advancement of our digital services,” he said. “Thanks to the stability and scalability of our Nutanix environment, we were able to quickly test and deploy a multitude of new services. Among these is our home care service offering, which was particularly critical during the pandemic as it allowed our doctors to diagnose and treat patients remotely. Likewise, Nutanix has enabled us to remotely manage appointments, payments and other vital patient services, with and as part of our telemedicine solution.

In a pilot project, aimed at demonstrating the value and effectiveness of empowering clinical staff with on-the-go access to digital data and applications, the IT team implemented VDI on Nutanix HCI at Saudi Hospital in Dammam.

Batterjee clearly intends to deepen his organization’s engagement with Nutanix. “We will be expanding our VDI deployment to all of our hospitals and medical schools. For this, we want to implement Nutanix Xi Frame because we were very impressed with its performance, scalability and availability, ”he said.

As a medical institution that places the greatest importance on the people side of its business, it’s no surprise that Saudi German Health places considerable value on its relationship with the local Nutanix team in Saudi Arabia.

“Whenever we have a requirement, the speed and quality of support from Nutanix has been exceptional. Their skills, talent and professionalism have set the bar very high for the industry, ”said Batterjee.
