Ava Chandler-Matthews is half of the cult Australian brand SPF Ultra Violet, here she shares her bedtime beauty rituals with Body + Soul.

Hello and welcome to our editorial series Bedtime Beauty Stories. It is a space for talented people and big names in beauty to share how they prepare for sleep, including ways to relax, nighttime beauty rituals and essential remedies to fall asleep. Co-founder of Australian sunscreen icon Ultra Violet, Ava Chandler-Matthews built a career in beauty, before setting her sights on SPF. We know her morning routine is all about protection, so here the beauty enthusiast gives us information on her PM rituals, including her simple, flight-worthy skincare steps.

What’s the first thing you do to relax before bed?

Put on my pajamas, brush my teeth and do my skin care routine. This means to me that bedtime is near (ish) although I am often in bed a few hours before going to sleep.

And the last thing you do before going to sleep?

Tell my husband I love him and have a sip of water.

Tell us about your nighttime routine …

I take my shower in the morning, but I only wash my face in the evening, so I’m going to wash my face – right now I’m using the Dermalist lactic cleanser which I enjoy, my Qr8 retinol cream which I am obsessed. and I wake up with glassy skin, then I use a layer of Aspect Probiotic Sleep Mask on top.

If my hair is a little shabby, I’ll use Bready Beauty Supply hair oil on the tips, but other than that I’ll usually brush it and put it in a bun to sleep. My hair is getting super knotty.

I will also apply a basic lip balm. Either Lanolips or Fresh Rose Petal Soft Lip Cream which smells of beautiful roses.

Are you taking any supplements or sleeping pills?

Damn, yes. Impossible to sleep without them! I use CBD under the tongue and around 3 mg of melatonin every night. I’m a terrible sleeper without them and wake up 5-6 times most nights.

What are you sleeping on?

Silk all the way. Although the annoying thing about silk is that they don’t keep their “slippery” after a few washes, so I feel like I replace them more often than I normally would. But yes, I am a slave to the silk pillowcase.

What’s your take on tech before bed?

I’m a thug and I don’t have a routine. My preference would be to put my phone down every night from 9 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and not pick it up until morning, but some nights it’s more difficult than others as we have a lot to do in the UK in this moment. Plus, my friendship group lyrics seem to come to life after 8 p.m. so I’m often stuck in silly convos until later than I would prefer.

I watch TV until I close my eyes – it’s literally my favorite thing to do in bed – and I also have a Kindle that I read if I don’t watch TV but I feel better if I do. don’t look at my phone or laptop screen after 9 p.m.

Do you have a favorite snack or a late night snack?

No, I don’t like to eat after dinner / dessert (usually eaten before 7pm). My husband often brings me chamomile tea in bed though.

What time do you usually jump in bed?

Like very early on. Sometimes from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Especially in winter, it’s my favorite. I love my bed.

What do you do if you can’t fall asleep or have trouble sleeping – do you have a perfect solution?

I would like to have a good answer to that. Sometimes I’ll take more melatonin or CBD, but usually I’ll keep thinking about the worst times in my life until my exhaustion takes over.
