1. Less is more

If you want to do it the French way, stick to this approach. According to Dr. Sikka, French skincare is not as aggressive as American or Korean skincare routines. French women like to accept imperfections and keep their natural skin while taking care of their skin.

A typical French skincare routine is simple and minimalist. They don’t overdo it and don’t change it frequently. The French beauty routine accepts imperfections and prioritizes long-term results over quick pleasure, says Dr. Debeshi.

2. CTM is the solution!

For the uninitiated, CTM is a skin care routine that basically consists of three steps: cleanser, toner, and moisturizer in universal order! While French women follow this age-old rule, they do it a little differently. Dr. Debeshi says what sets them apart is the basic formulation and the type of product they usually like. Instead of harsh cleansing gels and trendy “acid toners,” the French prefer gentle, moisturizing formulations. They pamper their skin as gently as a baby’s.

Breaking down the steps for us, Dr. Sikka points out that French skincare is all about focusing on long-term benefits rather than instant results. Here is a step-by-step guide to a typical French skincare routine:

Step 1: Micellar water to remove make-up

The tale is as old as the world: remove your makeup before focusing on your skin care! Both dermatologists recommend using micellar water to dissolve previously applied makeup or sunscreen. Dr. Debeshi explains, “An authentic French skincare routine often includes the use of micellar water, a product containing purified water, mild surfactants and a variety of moisturizers such as glycerin. It acts as a gentle cleanser and easily removes everything from makeup to debris. It is also alcohol-free, which is great for sensitive skin.

Step 2: Milk-Based Cleanser

The Cleansing Milk helps break down stubborn dirt particles, allowing the toner to remove them more easily. A milk-based cleanser that’s gentle and good for people with dry or sensitive skin, recommends Dr. Debeshi.

Step 3: Toner

After cleansing, comes the toner to soothe the skin. Dr. Sikka recommends using toners with soothing ingredients like aloe vera or rose water. Then you can use vitamin C-rich day serums to address issues like dullness, age spots, and pigmentation. It’s about maintaining the skin barrier and moisturizing the skin both internally and externally like the French way, she adds.

Step 4: Moisturizer

“The daytime moisturizers are lighter than the nighttime variants, so they work well with makeup and also contain a certain amount of SPF. The night routine is similar to the day routine, only the serum turns into a night specific serum like retinol followed by a good moisturizing night repair cream. The French belief that less is more holds true even with makeup, they also prefer an all-natural look,” says Dr. Sikka.

3. Face masks are essential

Face masks are impossibly thin sheets dipped in the goodness of serum and other skincare ingredients. They are essential in your routine if you want to follow the French skincare routine!

“A soothing mask is always part of the French approach to skin care. This product helps eliminate many skin problems, remove excess oil from the skin and rejuvenate the face. It is also wonderfully refreshing and prepare your skin for the day,” says Dr. Debeshi, so invest in good face masks for plump, super-hydrated skin.

4. Don’t forget your sunscreen

Sunscreen is a one-time investment that goes a long way in skincare. It protects against harmful UV rays that can put your skin at risk of developing cancer. Dr. Sikka says sunscreen is a must in a true Frenchwoman’s skincare routine! “Truly a girl’s best friend, it protects skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays and ensures skin tone stays even,” she recommends.

5. Beauty treatments

As much as we like to use natural ways to achieve perfect and beautiful skin, beauty treatments also work. Dr. Sikka says French women love to invest in beauty treatments and get treatment at a clinic once a month. “These can range from simple Medi facials to more complex treatments like vampire facials, injectable skin hydration boosters, etc. Additionally, the French approach to skincare is never complete without a relaxing face mask.”

Caution: Be sure to consult your dermatologist before incorporating any of these tips into your skincare routine.
